With the cases mounting daily and reaching almost an astounding figure of nearly 70,000 cases a day, the COVID 19 situation in India continues to be quite worrying. The Vaccine will still take some time to arrive. At present prolonged lockdowns and social distancing has been the only way to control the rapidly growing problem. It is indeed a great health hazard. The only respite though that the mortality rates as a result of the treatments are low and even improving further. Apart from being a great health hazard, the COVID 19 Corona Virus pandemic is also taking its toll on the economy. Job losses are mounting and with it pay cuts and so. Everything put together it is taking its toll on the mental health of many.
Even in West Bengal many are falling prey to various mental stress-related problems and in turn, it has triggered the need for Psychological Counseling. This is what has been reported in a recent Media Report.

What the Report Mentions?

It has been quite long since when the COVID 19 Pandemic struck and thereafter the patients suffering from the same went through immense trauma. Many feared that the very contraction of the disease would lead to death. However thankfully gradually with time, the treatments have improved and the mortality rates in India have been one of the lowest. Yet the great fear which has been inflicted needs to be handled well, failing which it could cast complete doom. It is in line with this it has been decided to carry out psychological counseling sessions for the patients itself. But with the rampant rise in cases and also keeping in view the rapidly deteriorating mental health conditions, the need for psychological counseling has risen like never before. It is also being observed that people who were already having certain pre-mental conditions, the current pandemic is feeling threatened further. There is also an urgent need for the timely prevention of hazards from a secondary mental health crisis is being felt.

It is in line with all these mental health conditions that a facility has been launched recently, where any person can avail tele-counseling regarding mental health conditions. The Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare has also given priority to the issue of people who are undergoing mental stress amongst COVID 19 suspects. The ministry is terming this initiative as the “Minding our minds during COVID19”. According to the Ministry, 2 psychologists and 2 psychiatrists have been employed who would counsel not only COVID 19 suspects but also doctors, nurses, and other health care workers who are at the very forefront to fight the pandemic. There are counselors at the quarantine centers too. So all in all there is an immediate need to address the concern of deteriorating mental health conditions amidst the Corona Virus pandemic.
