Life for many of us has become extremely hectic and stressful. It is good that many of us have become more health-conscious. But sadly, here, it only regards physical health. But what about our mental health? Even more worrying is that many of us are not even aware of the degrading mental health conditions. And if this is not identified and treated correctly, it would only get worse. A recent Media Report claims that a UNICEF survey across 21 countries claims that 41 % of young people in India seek support for treating some mental health problems. The COVID 19 Corona Virus Pandemic has brought into the limelight the mental health condition of the younger generation.
Impact of the Pandemic in India
The impact of the recent pandemic on children in India has been devastating. Many are isolated, afraid, and without parental support; some have experienced neglect or abuse because they could not get help when needed most during this difficult time. The second wave hit early this year which caused even more trauma for these innocent victims.
Findings of UNICEF regarding mental health
India has the second-highest number of children under twelve with mental health problems in South Asia. UNICEF’s report on 21 countries showed only 20% felt that people who battle these issues should seek support from others. Out of all respondents surveyed, India was #1 for just slightly more than half, saying they would get professional help or medication if needed! The only good thing about the study is that the state of mental health in India is somewhat better than the other countries, wherein the UNICEF study was conducted.
In a study of 21 countries, India was the only country where a minority felt that people with mental health problems should seek support from others. The rest ranged from 56-95%. However, even though better, the mental health condition in India is pretty worrying.
One in Every Seven in India are Depressed
One of the most shocking findings in this study was how many people globally deal with depression and little interest regularly. A staggering 14% or one-seventh, reported feeling depressed at some point during their life while another six-tenths felt indifferent to things which used be necessary such as engaging in activities that they enjoy; these global medians varied depending upon who you ask, but overall, nine countries had over 10%.
One out of five respondents has dealt with feelings akin towards Depression (14%).
Pandemic impact worst on children mental health
The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic that is entering its third year has been dangerous on children. Due to national and State lockdown measures, they do not access social services disrupting their routine education activities. Insecurity regarding family income plus uncertain health conditions left them angry, afraid, or unsure about the future.
In 2019 The Centers for Disease Control reported a significant increase in cases from this virus called covid 19 which was responsible for hospitalizations transmission, such as anger fear uncertainty.
The recent COVID-19 pandemic has left a lasting impression on the minds of many people. The Indian Journal Psychiatry found that 50 million children in India suffer from mental health disorders. Apart from this, about 80 to 90% have not sought help despite being aware of their condition’s importance for society and themselves.
A study conducted by WHO reports one billion adolescents worldwide are living with anxiety disorder; however, only 10%-15% seek professional treatment due to privileged social status or financial constraints.
